Golf R 19" Wheels/Tires
Yeah... so maybe not the "smartest" mod for an Electric Vehicle... but hey, this is a fun project car right? While I'm sure the OEM wheels that come on the eGolf are relatively lightweight, aerodynamic and are wrapped in "low-friction" tires for maximum range/mileage... they sure aren't pretty. So... while we do have some new wheels coming for Project EVolution... for now, I borrowed some OEM Volkswagen Golf R wheels from my buddy Scott Bushkin (who has baller BBS LM-Rs on his Golf R).
And yes, let's get this out of the way... these big 19" wheels, wrapped in sticky summer performance rubber tires have a HUGE impact on EV range. I only had the wheels on for only half of my daily commute (the ride home) and I used 1/8th more electricity than the day before just to get home. My guess is that if we say the car has an average range of 90 miles on a full charge, these wheels probably take 15 miles away, leaving you with 75. That's not good. For any long-term EV project, I would be seeking out some super lightweight wheels in 17" and I'd put on some specially designed Hybrid/EV tires, intended to extend MPG.
BUT... man, does the car look 1000% better or what?!?! I can't say that I love the OEM Golf R wheels but compared to the OEM eGolf wheels, these look fantastic on the car. I know that the car rides a little "high"... but stay tuned, more Project EVolution mods are coming soon!
