Day 1: The Volkswagen e-Golf project begins...
As part of the promotion for our annual event, Fastivus... Volkswagen USA has graciously provided us with a brand new 2015 e-Golf! Similar to last year's "Peach Cruiser", this e-Golf will be lightly modded to help promote our event while bringing awareness to Volkswagen's first EV, Volkswagen Accessories and some cool aftermarket mods to help make the car stand out.
As a big fan of EVs (I daily drive a Honda Fit EV and the wife drives a Chevy Volt)... I know all about the pros/cons of EV ownership. And all in all, it is safe to say that without a doubt, my family will never own another gas powered vehicle for daily driving use (exceptions being my nostalgic 1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, and maybe a Golf 7 R for performance driving on weekends).
I am averaging nearly 18,000 miles per year in my current EV... which is quite astonishing considering that the car only gets 90 miles on full charge. The commute to work is 25 miles each way and we use the Honda Fit EV every chance we get, over the Chevy Volt. The main reason, in addition to not wanting to use any gas, is that the Honda Fit EV lease is unique in that it came with unlimited miles due to it being a "compliance car", which means Honda will take back the cars after 3 years and study/destroy them as required by law... it's also cheaper to take back the fleet of 1100 Fit EVs rather than support them for the mandated 10 years.
My family has a 40A 220V charger in the garage (in addition to solar power), so we are absolutely ready to put the Volkswagen e-Golf through its paces. Already on day one, the wife and kids all have commented on how nice the car is and that is directly in comparison to the Honda Fit EV which is absolutely a "simple, compact commuter" vehicle with zero frills. The quality of materials, fit/finish and overall "niceness" of the Volkswagen e-Golf is light years beyond the Honda, as you would expect. My youngest daughter even remarked, "I like this better than the orange car"... which is a reference to the BMW 1 Series M Coupe that I owned a few years ago... quite the compliment I would say for an electric Golf.
Super excited for the next few months... after a few weeks of driving the EV in its purest form, we'll have some fun with it and begin the "modding" process (more to come on that later but nothing too crazy). We'll also be lining up some cool Volkswagen Accessories and reviewing them as well. Stay tuned for more... thank you Volkswagen USA and Volkswagen Accessories!
